IZZE joins in the summer fun at the 30th Annual Mermaid Parade and Ball in Coney Island!

June 25, 2012

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events. Founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that also produces the Coney island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island’s forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island.

The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.

IZZE was thrilled to join both the parade and the Mermaid Ball which was held in the Coney Island Aquarium as they celebrated their 30th year this past Saturday. Revelers came out dressed in amazing sea-themed costumes to join the parade’s King and Queen – Jackie the Jokeman and Anabella Sciorra as hundreds of floats, marching bands and Mermaids and Mermen partied in Coney Island.

The IZZE was flowing on the streets and at the awesome Ball which followed. Crowds enjoyed the music stylings of DJ Soulflower and Eddy Van Raven as well as an amazing performance by NYC’s very own MOBY. We’d like to spend a special shout-out to our friends at Sailor Jerry Rum, who we paired our delicious Ginger IZZE with to make some fantastic cocktails. It was wonderful to see so many of you out there and we really enjoyed talking with so many IZZE lovers at the IZZE tent. We hope to see you all next year for some more fun in the sun!
